Udawalawe National Park, located in the southern region of Sri Lanka, is one of the island's premier wildlife destinations, famed for its large herds of wild Asian elephants. Spanning over 30,000 hectares, this vast savannah and forest reserve is home to over 400 resident elephants, making it one of the best places in Asia to observe elephants in their natural habitat. Beyond elephants, visitors can spot leopards, water buffaloes, crocodiles, and over 180 species of birds. The Udawalawe Reservoir adds a scenic backdrop to jeep safaris, especially during golden hour. The Elephant Transit Home, located near the park entrance, offers a unique chance to watch orphaned elephants being rehabilitated for release into the wild. Best time to visit: May to September for dry season safaris with excellent wildlife sightings.
